“Braces” is plural for bracket. A bracket is a little metal square which we glue onto the tooth with an adhesive.
When you have braces, each tooth has a bracket on it. There are different kinds of brackets. There are single-wing brackets and double-wing brackets. Our brackets are single-wing brackets. We buy and we use in my practice, the smallest single-wing brackets made anywhere in the world. We like those because there’s a greater distance between the brackets on the teeth.
The greater the distance, the easier it is to put the wire in, the less friction there is, the faster the teeth move, and another big thing is you don’t trap food in there. If you don’t trap food in there, you won’t have issues with cavities, you won’t have issues with hygiene, you won’t have issues with gum disease.
But the other “big benefit” is you can use a very light wire, apply a light continuous force which will move your teeth most rapidly. So with the single-wing brackets, which is what we use, our patients finish up much faster, much easier, and with less pain than the twin bracket or the Siamese bracket, or double-wide, because the space between the brackets is very small. With such a small space, it’s very, very difficult to clean in there, and they trap food, and they are much more likely to get cavities and white spots, and there’s more friction, and it takes a lot longer to treat.
So, in our practice we use a single-wing bracket, because we think it’s best for our patients. They get a faster result, a better result, a cleaner result, less pain, and they’re done sooner with their fabulous new smile.
