At What Age Should Kids See An Orthodontist?

Randy M. Feldman D.D.S, M.S., Chief Smile Officer of Feldman offers advice on the subject of at what age kids should see an orthodontist in this video and blog.
Most children should see the dentist or the pediatric dentist at 2 years of age and most children should see the orthodontist at 7 years of age.
In fact my practice has what we call a 7-up program, we want to see kids anywhere from 7 on up, but 7 is the first age. But that’s the chronological answer. The real answer is the development milestone of when the first molars come in.
So either, 7 years of age or when the first molars are all in, that’s the perfect time to see the orthodontist.
When I see a 7 to 8 year old girl or boy we call this early observation or we call it checking for any interceptive problems. And what we’re specifically looking for, are things that are going to be growth problems later on or problems with what’s called arch-length deficiency, which means sever crowding that we can avoid extracting teeth on later on. So we might go ahead and fix a cross bite. We might expand the jaw, we might take out a deciduous tooth.
Many times that problem could be much more amenably resolved while the children are growing. We call this a developmental window of opportunity. Meaning, by doing something with the children when they’re 7, 8, or 9, not only you can avoid surgery or extracting teeth, but their bone turnover is quicker, faster, they’re growing, there are a lot of physiologic changes that occur.
There’s many things that trained orthodontist’s can pick up at 7 years of age and make the appropriate recommendations to either avoid surgery later on, avoid taking teeth out later on, or at least minimizing treatment time.
