What Causes Crooked Teeth?

A few years back, a study commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists determined that more than one-third of adults were unhappy with their smile. And not surprisingly, it went on to say that bad teeth were also the biggest dating turn-off for both men AND women. So, what’s causing these crooked teeth anyway? If you guessed genetics, well you would be right – at least in some cases. In other cases, crooked teeth are the result of bad habits such as poor oral hygiene. Loss of one or more teeth can cause the others to shift – spaces to be created – and thus crooked teeth. For others the problem even started as children by overuse of a pacifier or via thumb sucking. Also, airway issues play a great role in dentofacial growth and development. Allergies, deviated septum, and polyps are both structural and functional causes of changes in facial and dental growth patterns and do lead to various malocclusions! So genetics, airway and habits are the 3 main factors in the causing of misshaped faces and crooked teeth. If you’re among the one-third of adults who are unhappy with your pearly whites, don’t lose hope. Although treatment on adults may take a bit longer, great results can be achieved.  With the development of less visible, more effective braces, and the introduction of Invisalign, orthodontic treatment is appealing to many more adults. The length of your treatment depends on the severity of your problem, but can be shortened by new advances such as AcceleDent® Aura.More information on adult orthodontic treatment can be found on our website.
