Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

So what is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and how can you tell if you’re a
candidate?

Temporomadibular Joint Disorder

Temporomandibular joint disorder
(also known as TMJD, TMD, or TMJ) is characterized by an acute pain due to
inflammation of the temporomandibular joint and/or muscles of mastication. The
joint connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the skull (temporal bone) which is
located in front of the ears. TMD is associated with problems with the jaw, jaw
joint and facial muscles which control speaking and chewing. The temporomandibular
joints are flexible allowing the jaws to move smoothly while eating, yawning,
speaking, and the like.

TMJD causes include grinding the
teeth or clenching the teeth which place great pressure on the joint. Aside
from that, it can also be caused by jaw injuries, dislocation of the soft disc
that connects the mandible to the skull, presence of rheumatoid arthritis, and
stress.

Symptoms

So how do you know if you have
TMD? In order to know if you’re a candidate for Temporomandibular Joint
Disorder, you need to know the symptoms. TMJ is characterized by tenderness and
pain in the face, neck, joint area, ears, and/or shoulders upon speaking,
yawning, and chewing.

Patients who have TMD have
limited ability to open the mouth wide and clicking or popping sound can be
heard when the jaw moves. Furthermore, patients also experience difficulty in
chewing, swelling on the side of the face, and jaws might get locked when opening
or closing the mouth.

If you have experienced at least
one of the symptoms above, make sure you visit your orthodontist to avoid
further discomforts and pain which later on can affect your performance
especially at work. You can contact Dr Feldman on Tel: 813 968 2483.
