Can Braces Prevent Snoring?

Have you been told you snore? Or maybe you’ve spent a night or two next to your partner sawing logs and googled “how to stop someone from snoring” or “how to stop snoring immediately”. You’ll find that 40% of women and 57% of men snore! But did you know snoring can affect your overall health?

What causes you to snore?

Snoring occurs when air isn’t able to flow freely through your airway as you breathe in and out during sleep. This causes your upper airway tissues to vibrate, creating the dreaded sound of snoring!

Although everyone snores occasionally, whether it’s because of congestion, being super tired, taking sedative medication, or your sleeping position, sometimes there’s more to the cause of snoring.

If your jaw bones aren’t in proper alignment due to a common orthodontic condition, this can cause undue stress on your jaw and neck. This misalignment may be the cause of your waking up during the night!

When your airway is restricted enough that you aren’t receiving enough oxygen, your brain sends out an SOS signal and wakes you up. If you’re waking up multiple times in a night, you may have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea snoring causes random lapses in breathing while you sleep, and when left untreated, can lead to high blood pressure and stroke.

One effective snoring treatment method is orthodontic treatment! Yes, braces and Invisalign treatment are some of the best snoring solutions

Snoring Treatment with Braces or Invisalign

Orthodontics is synonymous with straight teeth. But braces don’t just straighten your teeth and give you confidence in your smile, they also help align your jaw as well!

When your jaw has a healthy alignment, airflow isn’t restricted and flows freely, allowing you to breathe easier during the day and at night. With healthy jaws, you can get your precious sleep and wake up refreshed and energized!

With nearly 40 years experience in creating beautiful smiles in Tampa Bay and East Bradenton, our orthodontists partner with sleep apnea specialists to create a custom treatment plan for you. This allows us to discover the exact cause of your snoring so we can efficiently treat it!

If braces treatment is recommended as your snore stopper, Dr. Cetta or Dr. Guloy will review dental x-rays with you, perform a thorough exam of your teeth and jaw, and discuss your braces options—we can even place your braces the same day as your complimentary exam!

Traditional metal braces are still a popular braces option among adults, teens, and kids! These braces aren’t the same awkward hunks of metal that sit on your teeth anymore. At Blue Wave Orthodontics, we use high-quality metal alloy braces brackets that are smaller, gentle on sensitive mouths, and easy to care for. Plus, they’re highly effective for jaw alignment as a snoring prevention! But if you prefer a more discreet treatment, Invisalign clear aligners are effective as a snoring treatment as well!

As a Diamond Plus Invisalign provider, our orthodontists have the knowledge and experience needed to craft your unique treatment plan with Invisalign. In fact, our very own Dr. Cetta created an appliance for Invisalign that is used throughout the world!

No matter the type of braces you choose, you can sleep comfortably again— with no snores.
