Top 3 Signs Your Teen Needs Braces or Invisalign

So your teen recently came home from school saying, “Mom, Dad, I have to get Invisalign!” Now you’re wondering, “do they even make Invisalign for teens? Is orthodontics for teens really all that necessary?” After all, this isn’t the first time that your teen came home insisting that you buy something…

How do you tell the difference between another trend – and something that could actually change your teen’s life?

We’ve got the answers for you. (And yes, Invisalign for teens is real! We’re proud to be the most experienced Invisalign practice in Tampa Bay, too.) The best way to tell whether your teen needs treatment is by visiting us at one of our offices in Wesley Chapel, North Tampa, South Tampa or East Bradenton.

One of our highly-experienced orthodontists, Dr. Cetta or Dr. Guloy will examine your teen’s smile and determine whether orthodontic treatment would be beneficial or necessary – at no cost to you.

If you’re looking for more answers from home first, we have 3 telltale signs that indicate your teen might be right about needing Invisalign after all!

Sign #1: Your teen hides his or her smile.

Does your teen have a habit of hiding his or her smile? Do they avoid taking pictures, or avoid going to social events with friends? Do they avoid making eye contact with people?

These are signs that your teen doesn’t have the self confidence they deserve to experience. The teenage years are fundamental for building strong self esteem and developing self-loving habits – not sitting on the sidelines and letting life pass you by.

Smiling and being proud of your smile play a huge role in building self esteem, connecting with people, and enjoying life to the fullest. Orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign can help teens love their smile and become their most confident self.

Sign #2: Your teen has apparent dental issues.

While many orthodontic problems require a trained orthodontist’s eyes to detect, others are pretty obvious. Dental conditions, such as crowded teeth, crooked teeth, spaced teeth, and some bite conditions, like overbite and underbite, can be noticeable.

Noticeable dental conditions are a telltale sign that orthodontic treatment is necessary or would be beneficial. Orthodontic treatment can correct misalignments in the teeth and jaws, and create a beautiful, healthy smile!

Sign #3: Your teen has difficulty biting, chewing, or speaking.

If your teen has functionality challenges, like trouble biting down evenly, difficulty chewing food thoroughly, or a speech impediment caused by a dental misalignment, this is a sign that orthodontic treatment can improve their life significantly.

When teeth aren’t aligned, or the upper and lower jaw bones are misaligned, teeth may not meet evenly in the front or back of the mouth when biting down. This can make it difficult to chew food properly, make it painful or uncomfortable to eat, and can lead to digestive problems.

Some speech impediments are caused by the alignment of the teeth, tongue, and lips. When they don’t meet evenly during speech, this can make it difficult to produce certain sounds. Gaps between the teeth and insufficient space in the mouth are common causes of speech problems.

A treatment of braces for teens or Invisalign, and/or an orthodontic appliance, can likely correct your teen’s functionality issues!
