Consumer Alert Regarding Self-Orthodontic Trend

There is a dangerous trend that was brought to our attention … consumers are attempting to straighten their own teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists is urging you to be aware of internet videos and websites which encourage straightening teeth with rubber bands, dental floss, or other objects which can be ordered online.Moving teeth without an orthodontist could result in infection, permanent loss of teeth, and expensive and painful lifelong dental problems. As orthodontists, we receive two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school, and are specialists in straightening teeth and aligning the bite.Dr. Feldman mentioned, “There is no retention, so teeth just move back (almost immediately) and you just divide the space between teeth in two, which does not correct anything.” Dr. Feldman discusses this self-orthodontic trend in this WFLA News Channel 8 television interview – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiPH_7dNiqg&feature=youtu.beThe official public service announcement video can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwFY9x22knc. I encourage you to watch and be observant with your teens and their friends in relation to this topic, which is quite alarming. We’re assuming that this trend grew out of economic frustration paired with the do-it-yourself DIY videos we all know and love. Feldman Orthodontics understands that our patients have different financial needs, therefore we offer a variety of payment plans, including LOW DOWN PAYMENT and LOW MONTHLY PAYMENTS, to ensure that treatment is affordable for your budget. We also accept assignment from most insurance plans and we will be happy to file all of the necessary paperwork for you.
